The girls woke the next morning to hear a growl rip through the air and saw a family of boars squeal away from the noise through the fog which hung around the base of the mountain. The next thing they saw was an ugly cat like creature prowling after them. Once it left, they looked inquisitively at TJ boiling water over the holly wood fire.
âWolverine,â he answered simply, putting tea into the water. He poured it out moments later as the girls folded up the blankets and put them into their pack. They ate and drank quickly and moved out before dawn poked itself into the forest.
By midday, they started the climb up the edge of the mountain, though they could see from here they soon would be scaling it. Melody was only slightly nervous, but Mar was terrified. She hated TJ for not warning them. She despised heights. Melody understood his reasoning though. He didnât want them to become even more dispirited. It was bad enough knowing that it wouldnât get any better. She watched as he started collecting wood and wrapping it with twine to carry on his pack.
âWhat are you doing that for?â She questioned.
He glanced at her, âCollecting wood. Black alder and holly is the best. Poplar is alright, but holly burns with an intense heat and the black alder is slow to burn. Together they make a great team.â
âYou want help?â Mar asked.
âSure. They canât be very big though. I need to be able to carry as much as possible so it will last for about two nights or so.â The girls helped him gather as much as possible and by the time night fell, he pulled them up and onto the first ledge of their climb. Tomorrow would be hell.
âTwo more days,â TJ encouraged once more as they lay down for bed. They ate a piping hot stew for dinner, but it did little to get the chill out of their bones. Darkness crept in and cold encompassed the nights and without the trees to break the wind, it felt even worse and wrapped its fist even tighter around the girls. They curled under the blankets and cloaks snuggling against one another. TJ put a little of his power into the fire to help it burn hotter and longer before he walked away to a small crystal clear crevice in the rock which held snow melt. He smiled at the girls; happy that, even with how cold it was, they could sleep. To him, it didnât feel cold at all on the outside, but he still couldnât sleep for more than a couple of hours on and off in the past week. If anyone looked close enough, they would be able to see the purple shadows forming around his eyes. Jake and Airé would both see it. I should talk to Jerry and see what heâs up to.
He bent over the small crevice of melted water, his dark hair falling over his face. He
